Amboseli animals at a glance
Amboseli animals include elephants, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, wildebeest and zebra. Buffalo and hippos live in the swamps, and the park has a very long bird list. The scenery is open, so animals are often easy to spot against the grass and the mountain. Good chances are normal on a full game drive, but no sighting is promised on any day.
Not every animal in the region lives inside the park boundary. Some counts cover the whole ecosystem, which reaches across the border into Tanzania. This page keeps the park and the wider area apart where it matters.

What lives where
Habitats help you decide where to spend your time.
Elephants, the headline animal
Large resident herds feed in the swamps and on the open grass. They have their own page, with numbers and research background, at Amboseli elephants.
Plains animals
Wildebeest and zebra graze on the open ground. Lions, cheetahs and hyenas live in the same area. Plan a full day, for example on an Amboseli safari, for the best chances.
Swamp animals
Buffalo and hippos are associated with the swamp below Observation Hill. Sightings depend on the day and on the water. The swamps are explained on the Lake Amboseli page.

Amboseli wildlife guide
The main groups and what to know about each.
| Animal | Where to look | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Elephant | Swamps and open grass | The park's signature animal; large family herds |
| Lion | Plains, near herds of grazers | Counts cover the wider ecosystem, not only the park |
| Cheetah | Plains | Large predator; sightings vary |
| Hyena | Plains | Large predator of the plains |
| Wildebeest and zebra | Open grassland | Common grazers in the park |
| Buffalo and hippo | Swamp below Observation Hill | Depends on the water and the day |
For most visitors, a full day with a driver who knows the park gives a good mix: elephants near the swamps, then the plains for predators and grazers.
Birds of Amboseli
A long list for a short visit.
The park has more than 400 bird species, including about 40 birds of prey. Wider counts reach around 600 species, depending on which areas they include. Both numbers show that you will see many kinds of birds, even if you are not a keen birdwatcher.
Ask your driver where birds are being seen, since a good driver can point out birds you would miss. Bring binoculars if birds interest you, and spend some of the day near the swamps.

Lions, rhinos and the Big Five
Be realistic about what the park offers.

Lions are present, and lion counts cover the wider ecosystem, not only the park. Do not expect a fixed number for the park alone.
Do not plan on a full Big Five inside the park. The rhinos of the wider ecosystem have been recorded in the Chyulu Hills and Mbirikani area rather than on the Amboseli plains. If rhinos are important to you, ask your operator what is realistic, and read about the Chyulu Hills.
Park rules for watching animals
These rules apply to every vehicle.
20 m distance
Keep at least 20 m from wild animals. Do not crowd a predator.
Existing tracks only
Stay on tracks. Off-road driving is not allowed, and the speed limit is 40 km/h.
Stay inside
Remain in the vehicle except at designated places. Do not feed animals and do not sound the horn.
Plastic and rubbish
Single-use plastic is not allowed in the park, and you take your rubbish with you.
Drones
Drones need a Kenyan aviation licence and a fee. For non-residents the fee is $300 per drone, per day and park, so leave the drone at home unless you have arranged everything in advance.
Gate times
The gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00, with an exception for guests staying overnight. See park fees for entry costs.
