Visiting a Maasai village near Amboseli

Visits to manyattas (Maasai homesteads) and cultural centers are among the things to do around Amboseli. A Maasai village visit is a meeting with a family or a community, not a ride in the park. There is no single standard program, and a line on a tour page does not tell you what a particular family offers.

The land around the park is not empty wilderness. The Maasai are the main population in and around the Amboseli biosphere reserve, and people live, farm and keep livestock on group-owned land. Wildlife and people share much of this country. If you want to combine a village visit with game drives, start with the Amboseli safari tours and check what each program includes.

How to visit respectfully

Simple rules that fit any visit to a home.

Agree the visit first

A visit happens with the consent of the people you meet. Ask your operator or host before you go what the visit involves, how long it takes and what it costs. Agree on these points at the start, not at the end.

Ask before you photograph

Ask people before you take their photo, and ask permission before you photograph a home or any private building. Consent for each picture is a sound rule, even where nobody states it.

Follow your host

Customs and expectations differ from family to family, and no uniform set of village rules applies everywhere. Follow the guidance of your host and guide, and ask when you are unsure.

Treat it as a meeting

Come to listen and to learn, not to collect pictures. Expect conversation, and do not expect a staged performance or a fixed schedule.

Communities and conservation around the park

Group ranches and shared land.

Group ownership of land (group ranching), farming and community-based conservation are part of how the land is used. The Olgulului and Ololarashi group ranches, and Kimana, lie in this landscape. Exact ownership and conservancy boundaries are not something you can read off a map, so ask locally if it matters for your plans.

This shared land is why the area outside the park matters for wildlife. The Kimana Sanctuary, a protected area on community land, links Amboseli with Tsavo. You can read more on the Kimana and Loitokitok page, and on the history of Amboseli, which started with land set aside for the Maasai.

Village visits on a trip

What to check in a program.

Day trips from Nairobi

Some Amboseli day trips include a Maasai village stop. Read the program for what it says about the stop, and ask what the stop costs and what it includes.

Park entry is separate

Do not assume that a park ticket covers a village visit. Park entry rules are on the park fees page, and the park gates close at 18:00, so plan the order of your day.

Cash and payment

Ask in advance how a visit is paid for. Do not assume it can be settled by card, and do not assume a set donation or tip.

The Mara

If you also travel to the Mara, that area has its own guide to Maasai village visits in the Masai Mara.
