How an Amboseli safari works

The main activity in Amboseli National Park is the game drive: you travel in a safari vehicle on the park's existing tracks, stop for animals and return before the gate closes. Gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00, with an exception for guests staying overnight. Elephant herds are the best-known sight, and there are also good chances of giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, lions and many birds. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Most visitors book a guided safari that includes the vehicle and a driver guide, then add the park fees and, if needed, a lodge or camp. Offers differ in what they include, so read the inclusions before you compare prices. The sections below break the costs into parts you can check yourself.

The private game drive suits you if you are already staying near the park and want your own schedule. The two-day Land Cruiser safari adds an evening and a morning drive, and the three-day van with full board suits a group that wants the vehicle to itself.

1 day, 2 days or 3 days

These are planning formats, not official minimum or ideal stays.

FormatSuitsFixed costs to plan (non-resident adult, 2026)
Day trip from NairobiShort on time, no night awayEntry $90, plus a vehicle fee for the day. The road is 204 km each way via Emali.
2 days, 1 nightA first visit with game drives on two daysEntry $90 for each 24 hours, plus the vehicle fee for each day, plus the night.
3 days, 2 nightsMore time for the swamps, Observation Hill and a village visitEntry $90 for each 24 hours, plus the vehicle fee for each day, plus two nights.

For most first-time visitors, 2 days with one night near the park is the practical choice. It cuts the long road into two parts and gives you game drives on two days. If you want a 3 days Amboseli safari, use the extra day for the swamps and for a quieter pace. Ask the operator for the pickup time and the planned return, because the drive from Nairobi takes a good part of a day.

Amboseli safari costs: what to add up

Park fees are set separately from the price of the tour or the lodge.

Park entry

For non-residents, $90 per adult and $45 per child in 2026, for one entry of up to 24 hours. Residents and citizens pay in Kenyan shillings, for example KES 1,500 for an East African citizen adult.

Full fee table โ†’

Vehicle fee

Per vehicle and day: KES 600 for fewer than 6 seats, KES 1,500 for 6 to 12 seats and KES 3,000 for 13 to 24 seats. The fee belongs to the vehicle, not to each passenger.

Camping

Public campsites in Amboseli list $30 per adult and $25 per child for non-residents, special campsites $50 and $25. Check the unit and availability when you book.

Where to stay โ†’

Tour or driver

The price of a guide, a vehicle and meals depends on the operator and the season. Compare what each offer includes, such as transfers, meals and park fees.

Drones

Drone use needs a licence from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and a fee of $300 per drone, per day and per park for non-residents. It is not a free right of every visitor.

Game drive rules in the park

  • Drive at no more than 40 km/h and stay on existing tracks. Driving off road is not allowed.
  • Keep at least 20 m away from wildlife.
  • Stay in the vehicle except at designated places.
  • Do not feed animals and do not sound the horn.
  • Single-use plastic is banned in Kenya Wildlife Service parks, and you take your rubbish with you.

The gate hours also set the frame for your day. Night drives are not part of the standard visit. A good driver guide knows these rules and keeps the vehicle where it should be.

Kenya safari: Amboseli as one stop

Combine the park with others on a longer trip.

Many Kenya safari routes link several parks. The Kenya Wildlife Service tariff lists a Tsavo West and Amboseli package at $150 per non-resident adult ($80 per child or student) and a Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Amboseli package at $215 ($115). These figures cover park access only, not the drive, a guide or a bed, and the conditions for using a package need checking before you buy. Compare them with the parks' own tariffs in the Tsavo park fees guide.

A scheduled small-aircraft service links Wilson Airport in Nairobi with Amboseli, with a connection onward toward the Masai Mara. That connection is planned, not a promise of a complete round trip in one day. For the Mara side, see flights to the Masai Mara. You can also add the Chyulu Hills, which have their own entry fee and landscape.

Amboseli safari: frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for an Amboseli safari?

There is no official minimum. A day trip from Nairobi is possible, 2 days with a night near the park is a common plan, and 3 days gives more time for swamps and viewpoints. The tours page explains transfers and day trips.

Will I see elephants on a game drive?

The chances are good, since elephant families are the park's best-known animals, but no sighting is guaranteed. See the elephants page.

Can I drive myself in Amboseli?

The park rules apply to every vehicle: 40 km/h, existing tracks only, no off-road driving and 20 m distance to wildlife. Many visitors prefer a driver guide who knows the tracks. Ask the vehicle or rental provider about the road to the gate.

Are park fees included in the safari price?

It depends on the offer. Some tours include them and some do not, so check the inclusions. If you pay yourself, the KWS tariff applies, shown on the park fees page.

Can I fly to Amboseli?

Yes. Scheduled flights run from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, with flight times of roughly 35 to 45 minutes in 2026. Check the timetable and the landing strip before you book. See getting there.
